CHAPTER IV

“I have been patient with you John, giving you your space to deal with this…I am tired! What in God's name is this? What are you doing Whatsapping this bitch anyway? …and do not bring me work excuses, please! Please! It’s really gotten stale! I don’t buy that bull anymore!”

She had never been this furious, but the subject of Hannah, the other woman, had come up one too many times.

“This is the second time John!” She lamented angrily.

Twice was one too many for Nancy.

“Why are you doing this to me? Why are you doing this to us? Do you think I deserve ‘the other woman’ drama?”

“You are the only wo…”

“Then who is this? What are you doing texting her at one in the morning?” She screamed throwing his phone to his face. John protected his face with his arm and his phone ricocheted to the floor.

“I have done everything to show you that I love you! I have been the good woman, I don’t nag, I don’t put my friends over you, I come home to you every night whether we are okay or not, I have given you everything! Hell, I had even finally considered giving you that damn painting that you always wanted…just to show you that I’m really into this!”

She was uncontrollably crying - so much so that it was becoming a little difficult for her to breathe.

John walked closer to her to try and hold her and she pushed him away.

“Do not touch me! Do not dare touch me! You have betrayed our love!”

“No, I did not, I didn't do anything, I swear to you!”

She slothed to the window, gently rubbing her abdomen. She wiped her tears with her palm.

“You have betrayed our family!”

John’s eyes suddenly lit up. “What did you just say?”

“I am pregnant John! I am fucking pregnant!”

Tears appeared at the corners of his eyes. He bit his upper lip.

“We are going to be parents?”

There was a long pause.

“No! I am gonna be a parent…you are just gonna be John, just John!”

She was looking outside at the evening traffic, her back turned to John. She was still fighting her tears.

“Don’t say those things because I swear I did nothing wrong! I can explain…”

She raised her palm towards his face. He looked down.

“…I am not cheating on you with Hannah. She is just a friend…just a friend and nothing is going on between us because she knows about you and she is…”

“Spare me!”

“We’ve been talking and she has been advising me on some things…”

“You have no shame, John...telling me that bullshit, telling your girlfriend that bullshit!” She scoffed between breaths. “I think you should go!”

“…I told her I was married…”

“What?” She turned to him confused.

He was down on one knee holding a ring.

“Oh my god!”

“Her husband owns a little jewelry shop in Mombasa…this ring belonged to my mother, I had given her to clean it up for me so that I could give it to you!”

“Oh my fucking god!” She yelled.

“I told her I was married about a month ago, and I don’t want that to be a lie anymore…will you marry me Nancy Delilah Etemesi? For the past year, there is nothing that I have wanted more than to be your husband!”

His hands were trembling. Tears rushed down his face. Nancy’s hands covered her mouth in disbelief. She let out a sigh and moved to where he was and knelt. In a span of two minutes, she had gone from being the angriest woman in Nairobi to the happiest. She looked into his eyes.

“Are you okay?”

“I’m in shock!”

“I love you!”

“I know…I know now!” She engulfed him with her arms. “Of course, I will marry you, was that ever in doubt?”

“Well, for a second there I thought…”

“It was never in doubt!” She interjected. “Who are you?”

“I am yours!” He replied.

He put the ring on her finger and looked up into her eyes. He had never seen her happier.

“We are pregnant!”

“I am going be a dad…you are going be my wife!”

“Well, you are already my daddy!” She hissed.

She pushed herself onto him and kissed him to the floor.

As they kissed, John took his phone with one hand, awkwardly texting, “She loved it thank u”
